Hoof care

Consequences of lameness

Cow lameness is caused by various factors – most often from an unbalanced nutritional regime through certain lactation stages of the cow, but also equally problematic are low hygiene conditions in animal housing, irregular/unbalanced hoof-trimming to improper stall dimensions and lack of regular and efficacious foot bathing.

The cost of lameness is quite dramatic – typically over $250 per case (Michigan State University, 2000)

• Lameness reduces a cow’s ability to access feed lowering nutritional intake and hindering milk production (Warnick, 2001)

• Treatment costs are higher for lame cows – special treatment procedures are required depending on lameness type (Cook, 2001)

• Conception rates are hindered increasing days open and increasing the number of breedings required (Hernandez, 2001)
