Recent and important achievements of DeLaval

DeLaval VMS robot arm a finalist of the European Business Award 2007

DeLaval was one of 10 finalists in the Siemens Business Innovation of the Year Award category at the European Business Awards 2007. The awards showcase the most successful
organisations across the EU. DeLaval was nominated for their hydraulic robot arm of the VMS.

“We are very pleased to have reached the final selection in this prestigious award. DeLaval has always had a very strong focus on customer driven innovations. This is recognition of that focus delivering true customer benefits”, said Joakim Rosengren in an official press release.

The European Business Awards is a completely independent programme designed to recognise and celebrate business excellence across the 25 territories of the EU and the winners will be announced at a ceremony in Brussels in January 2007.

New generation VMS launched

DeLaval introduced the new generation voluntarily milking system VMS in November, 2006. The new system is equipped with the first true automatic somatic cell counter available for automatic milking systems. DeLaval online cell counter OCC allows dairy farmers to gain access to a level of knowledge and precision not available until now.

The online cell counter OCC is designed around technology that is proven in university and in the field – namely the award winning DeLaval cell counter DCC. “Our online cell counting technology provides farmers with a powerful tool to closely follow-up their cows in a way that was not possible until now”, says Thierry Perrotin, Solution Manager VMS.

The VMS unit has been given a totally new design to meet the extreme duty requirement of non-stop milking. The new robot, made entirely of stainless steel has a built-in floor and integrated components to make it a “plug and milk” concept. Many features have been integrated reducing installation time by 33%, and according to the company, the new generation DeLaval VMS has an increased capacity that make it possible to milk two more
cows compared with previous versions.

Hamra Conference

Hamra Farm is the research and development farm of DeLaval, but it is also a commercial farm with a training and visit centre. As such the farm offers DeLaval a unique business advantage. The company brings existing- and presumptive customers to Hamra Farm to demonstrate the many solutions of DeLaval and to train the sales staff on the latest innovations.

In 2006 the conference/training and visitors part of Hamra Farm was separated from the milk production activities and Hamra Conference was created. The reason for the split is to focus even stronger on the business advantage Hamra Farm offers to support the business process. In the first step the restaurant facilities have undergone an extensive facelift and in next step the plan is to rebuild Hamra School to a more adequate conference building with
accommodation for the external and internal guests. Approx. 3 000 external visitors comes to Hamra Farm on yearly basis.

The 500th Herringbone Rotary milestone reached!

Since the introduction of the Herringbone Rotary (HBR) DeLaval has sold more than 500 installations throughout the world.
Mr and Mrs Francken, the proud owners of the 500th HBR from DeLaval, have a farm in the Netherlands with a plan to milk around 100 cows and they say “We chose the DeLaval Herringbone Rotary because of the consistent milking routine and the highest throughput
per milker. Labour efficiency will be very important if I expand my farm the coming years as planned. DeLaval had the best and most complete offer for me. I wanted one partner to supply the whole range and the confidence I have in my DeLaval dealer is also very
important for me” says Mr. Francken.

The DeLaval HBR is a well known concept in milking and is top of the range when it comes to technology and features. DeLaval has developed a very competitive solution in internal rotaries with a unique design with sequence gates allowing the cows to position
themselves comfortably when milked. The main markets for HBR are situated in Europe.

Germany, for example, is one of the biggest Herringbone rotary markets in the world but other large markets include Denmark and the Netherlands. HBR also has a well established market in South America.

DeLaval sets up business in Pakistan

DeLaval has set up a new sales office in Lahore, Pakistan. Together with Tetra Pak DeLaval is gearing up to meet the growing demand for milk products in Pakistan. The increasing standard of living in Pakistan is making dairy products more popular and today
the milk consumption is by far exceeding the supply of raw milk suitable for processing.

The Pakistani government has recognised the importance of the dairy industry and has launched the “White revolution” project. The project aims at increasing the milk yield and milk quality of the country’s 50 millions dairy animals. Pakistan is one of the largest milk
producers in the world with 80% of the milk being produced by buffaloes.

The challenge for the DeLaval/Tetra Pak team will be to increase the knowledge at farm level on nutrition, milk quality, cooling, breeding etc.

Awards in 2006

DeLaval cell counter DCC continues to be one of the most rewarded solutions in the product portfolio of DeLaval. In 2006 it collected awards in New Zealand, during the National Fieldays and at the International Fair Ferma Bydla 2006 in Poland, where the DCC was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal – for being a top innovative solution.

At another Polish fair, the International Agricultural Fair POLAGRA-FARM 2006, the DeLaval Vacuum pump DVP F was awarded the PIF Gold Medal. The medal is given to a product that is: innovative, useful, and original, reliable, practical, cost-effective and has a
positive influence on the environment.

In Russia DeLaval Performance Tester VPR100 won a gold medal at the Fourth International forum “Dairy Industry 2006”. The unique test instrument, which allows easier testing of milking equipment, won a Gold Medal.

DeLaval feeding table cover has only been launched in France yet but is has already been awarded the Innov’space award for best innovation at the SPACE fair in France. The product covers and protects the feeding table surface with its patented PVC roll for
improved hygiene.

Strategic licensing

In 2006 DeLaval acquired the mixer wagon license from Storti International. The company’s range of mobile and stationary mixers is now under their own property and control. This action will continue to support the excellent business development within this
area and allow DeLaval to further develop their product range.
The mixer wagon business of DeLaval has had a very positive growth over the last four years. The strong development will be further supported as it gives the company the freedom to strengthen the implementation of changes in exiting product range adding new models to the assortment. In line with this, yet another license agreement has been negotiated, for the incorporation of vertical mixer wagons to the range. This strategic direction will make it possible for DeLaval to achieve their high set goals.

The biggest parlour in Europe

In September 2001 the very first DeLaval milking unit was installed at the Krasny Vostok farm in Tatarstan, Russia. Today in the region, every third cows enjoys the modern solutions of DeLaval. It is the commitment of the Russian authorities to support milk producers all over the country that is driving this strong development of the dairy industry.

Today four mega farms with 4 000 dairy cows each have increased its milk yield from 20 litres to 30 litres per cow with a milk quality that is up to par with EU standards. But that is not all, currently the largest Blue Diamond Cascade Milking Parlour 2x52 in Europe, which was sold in April 2006, is being installed at the farm. The sale also includes cooling solutions as well as cow comfort solutions to support animal health and milk quality.
