Organic dairy in Oregon receives the state’s first DeLaval robot

Mayfield Farm, in Aurora, Oregon, continues to make strides in sustainable food production. The 450-head dairy is robotically milking 50 of its cows with one DeLaval Voluntary Milking System (VMS™). This is the state’s first farm to install a VMS unit, and the organic dairy producer is considering expanding the solution to accommodate the rest of its herd.

Chris Eggert

“Overall, we’ve been impressed with the milk quality, udder health and production from our cows being milked robotically with VMS,” says Chris Eggert, Director of Mayfield Farm and three other organic dairies in the region.

“The VMS is in line with the low-stress environment we’ve created at the dairies. The cows essentially milk when they want and we like what this does for their overall well-being. Being able to redistribute our labor to other jobs on the dairy, such as caring for the cows and herd management, is also a large benefit.”

The milk from Mayfield Farm is used in a popular line of creamy and condensed soups for the Pacific Natural Foods brand, owned by the Eggert family.

DeLaval VMS has been approved by regulatory authorities in Oregon as a system safe for milking. The move opens the door for the state’s producers interested in productive and sustainable automated milking. VMS is also kind to cows by gently cleaning and stimulating each teat for optimum milk let down.
