Milk cooling solutions for VMS
In conventional milking systems the milk tank is filled to ten percent of its capacity before starting to cool the milk.
This means in conventional 6,000 liter milk cooling tank for example, 600 liters of milk are needed before cooling can start without freezing the milk. Freezing milk severely damages its protein structure, affecting both its taste and appearance. This reduction in quality naturally reduces milk income.
DeLaval milk cooling tanks are designed to start automatic cooling when the tank is five percent full. But with average flow rates of 1.6 liters per minute in robotic milking systems, it would take more than three hours to reach that minimum level for cooling, or even longer in larger milk tanks. This time frame is too long: milk quality cannot be preserved by using conventional cooling systems for milk being delivered via automatic milking.
Automatic milking has brought a new set of challenges for cooling, since it delivers milk to the tank at irregular intervals and flow levels. On top of that, consider what happens when the main storage tank has been emptied by the airy and then requires cleaning, while the milking stations continue to milk cows on demand.
DeLaval has responded to the challenge, developing two cooling systems to work with DeLaval VMS and ensure that milk quality is preserved:
- DeLaval flow controlled cooling FCC. This unique cooling solution for DeLaval voluntary milking system VMS is based on our patented concept of flow controlled cooling. DeLaval VMS notifies the cooling tank of the volume of milk delivered to it, on a real time basis. The tank then adjusts its cooling capacity to suit that milk volume.
- DeLaval buffer controlled cooling BCC. This solution is available with different buffer tank sizes and cooling approaches. These systems are designed to work “around the clock” and as standalone solutions for DeLaval VMS and any AMS system.

Milk collection can happen at any time of the day and only a few buttons need to be activated by the dairy trucker. No parts need to be moved or cleaned manually. The system will send an alert if it detects an unexpected error, so preventive action can be taken before any serious problem can happen.
